Canadian Construction specifications
Specifications are a set of explicit requirements to be satisfied by a material, product, or service and are usually written and organized in a specific format. In North America the construction industry uses the MasterFormat™ standard published by Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) and Construction Specifications Canada (CSC). It provides a master list of titles and section numbers used for organizing data related to construction requirements, products, activities and other project information for most commercial building design and construction projects. This is used by architects, engineers, specifiers, contractors, suppliers and other consultants.
In the USA the CSI three part product specification is the standard, while in Canada both the Canadian Master Specification (CMS) and National Master Specification NMS) are used. The primary difference between CMS and NMS specifications are that the NMS has been developed by Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) for use by the federal government and other public organizations. It can also used by the private sector in the preparation of construction and renovation contract documents.
